Week 2, Run 3

Another week completed….Yay!!! In the main Week 2 proved pretty much straight-forward with no drama’s. The only problem with successful weeks/runs is that they can give you a false sense of security – they can make you want to skip ahead to a week that YOU feel will be more challenging! Thankfully I have many examples of where I have suffered from impatience – and none of these examples have ended up positively – therefore I am massively confident that I won’t give in to temptation this time.

Today I had my 1st post 9.30am lie-in for a month and my batteries certainly felt recharged as a result. I eventually left the house at around 11.30am with The Prodigy’s “Out of Space” blaring out in my lug ‘oles. My run, whilst uneventful, did manage to bring about a couple of smiles to my face. Both occasions were courtesy of elderly members of the community. The first happened as I ran towards an elderly lady. She flashed a huge smile at me and asked, with a cheeky twinkle in her eye, whether I was training for the 2012 olympics! The second was when an elderly man gave me the thumbs up and shouted “go on mate” as I huffed and puffed past him. Now, these don’t sound like major things, and certainly not the sort of things that most bloggers would blog about, however in light of the negativity that London, and it’s inhabitants, receives with regards to community spirit, or lack of it, I thought I’d take this opportunity to buck the trend.

C25K Week 2, Run 2

Another run chalked off – this time the 2nd run of week 2.

I couldn’t for the life of me get up this morning and it got to the point where I seriously thought I might not bother with this run. However, I finally decided to drag myself out of my warm bed to brave the elements in a near deserted Catford at around 9.20am.

The run itself was fine. No pain in my legs, or more specifically my calves, no burning chest… was all fine. I even got confident (cocky) at one stage and, after one 1.5 minute run, decided to run my walk period of 2 minutes before going straight into the next 1.5 minute run in scenes reminiscent of an African long-distance runner!!!

Although was only my 5th run of the programme I can already see an improvement in my fitness levels. Placebo effect? Perhaps. However, in my mind (and my legs and chest) I am improving, so that’s good enough for me at this moment in time.

I’ve got a rest day tomorrow (Friday) and then I’ll be doing my final run of the week on Saturday. Can’t wait!!!

The Wife v The Mistress

I’ve still not given up the fags. Try as I may, I don’t seem to have the determination needed to quit. So I’m left with a dilemma – as, even if it’s not entirely obvious now with me only in the early stages of the C25K programme it sure as hell will be in a few weeks time, I cannot both run and be a smoker so I have to choose one.

Smoking, for me, is more about the “habit” than the “addiction”. Often it’s that I feel that I should have a cigarette as opposed to me getting the shakes and sweating when I’ve not had one. I need to find a way to break the habit. As I said previously though, I cannot be the runner that I want to be whilst being seduced by nicotine.

Running to me is like a wife – I plan to do it for ever (well as long as physically possible), it’s a long-term thing – I want to grow old with running. There’ll be good days and bad days but we’ll work through them. Cigarettes, however, are the mistress in this relationship – they give me a short term lift but ultimately they are very bad for my health!!!

I know that if I stick rigidly to the wife I will simply have no time, or need, for the mistress 🙂

C25K Week 2, Run 1

Yaaayyyy, I’ve made it and i’ve lived to tell the tale!  Week 1 of the C25K programme has been consigned to the archive pages of my blog!  And so to week 2….

I made it out at about 7:00am today which, if you know me, you will know is a major accomplishment!!  Week 2 of the programme is made up of 6 1.5 minute runs – with 2 minute walks in between…which in essence shouldn’t be too difficult but it definitely tested my breathing!! 

Speaking of breathing….whilst dropping my son to nursery this morning I was sitting in traffic when a young female jogger ran past my car.  Now, in the past I’ve never really noticed joggers but since started my own running experience the world of running has somehow become “visable” to me.  This particular jogger was running up what I can only decribe as a mini mountain, such was the steepness of the incline, but her breathing was more steady than a surgeon’s hand!  Incredible.  Unfortunatly, due to the fact that she was a young/attractive female, wearing tight running clothes, I possibly/probably looked like an old letch with my mouth gaping open.  I was half tempted to wind down the window and yell at her….

“The only thing I’m checking out is your breathing!  Honest!!”

I love my running shoes, I really do….BUT, having to wear shoes half a size larger than my normal shoes makes me look somewhat penguin-like.  The tights don’t really help either!!!

I feel I wouldn’t look out of place in the cast of “Happy Feet”!!

C25K Week 1, Day 3

So, I did it.  Week 1 finally out of the way. However, whilst days 1 and 2 went by without any problems, day 3 was an altogether much different experience.

My efforts to leave the house at 5:30am proved futile as my deep state of sleep meant I didn’t hear my alarm.  Instead I had to settle for a post work/post dinner run…in the rain!  And so I set off – the heavens above S.E. London kindly chose the moment I stepped out of my house to open.  Great!  It was at this point that I experienced my first “issue”.  The C25K programme that I accessed through the “Getrunning” Iphone app includes a 5 minute warm up and a 5 minute warm down at the beginning and end of the “runs”.  So, whilst the world and his wife around me were sprinting here, there and everywhere in an attempt to get out of the rain I was “briskly” walking in amongst them all.  I could almost see a look of bemusement in the face of the elderly lady that zoomed past me, shopping trolley in tow, whilst I toodled along in tights!!!

Well I persevered and the 5 minutes warm up time finally passed – which brought me to my second issue…my legs had given up the ghost!!!

Now, during runs 1 and 2 I, quite arrogantly possibly, felt that I wasn’t being challenged enough.  I wanted to run more and walk less.  Well, I have to say that my decision to ignore my urges was one of the best decisions that I’ve made in recent times.  The reason?  As soon as I started to run my flippin’ calves felt as if somebody had gone crazy at them with a blowtorch!  The pain I felt was excruciating!  Walk/run it made no difference…..they bloody hurt! 

Despite the agony that I was in I’m pleased to say that I managed to grit my teeth and get through the session.  I even managed to get the wife to massage my aching muscles when I got home.  So, all’s well that ends well – and I’ve learnt not to question running programmes designed by professionals 😉

Week 2 begins on Tuesday…..cant wait!!!

C25K Week 1, Runs 1 & 2

I’ve only gone and bleedin’ done it!  I’ve completed my first two runs!  No prompting needed from others, no coercing, I just slung on my cool new running gear and got on with it.

To be honest I didn’t find the runs too bad and I even resisted the urge that has seen me get frustrated with myself in past efforts to regain a semblance of fitness – the urge to do too much too soon.  I actually stuck rigidly to the plan despite feeling that I could have done more.  This is definitely a step in the right direction for me and makes me feel that I will actually take this running lark seriously.

Mapping a route was something that I found more difficult.  With no parks nearby, and not wanting to complete the 30 minute sessions stranded in the middle of nowhere, with lead-like legs and no energy to get home, I spent run no.1 circling the block.  With no views to speak of and some crazy inclines I made a note to self to find a different route for run no.2.  Unfortunately, my planning skills are pretty limited so I never got around to planning a decent route for run no.2.  Instead, I just ran blindly.  This, however, wasn’t necessarily a bad thing as it enabled me to get to know my local surroundings a little better…

I’m really looking forward to week 2 now – although I still have one more run in week 1 which I will do tomorrow.
